Fredo Viola - The Sad Song
First featured: January 18 2005, again in December 2007
Result: collaborations with Massive Attack, signed to Because Music, synch opportunities
The tracks we feature and later hail as successes aren't just the ones that go Top 10 or get signed to a major - it has never been criteria for how we judge the success of a featured track. Sometimes it's just about presenting the right track in front of the right people, whether that's a record label, a manager or a journalist. We knew that Fredo Viola was never a straightforward crossover success we first picked him in January 2005, but we did know it was a captivating and original song from a fascinating artist. Bound to get the attention of someone, right? Right. Neil Davidge got in touch with us after we featured it telling us that he loved the track and video and that Massive Attack (who Neil produces and composes with) wanted to collaborate. The track also featured on The O.C. and CSI: Miami before it was re-featured as Record of the Day in December 2007 after Fredo had been signed to French label Because Music.

The Record of the Day featured soundclip slot can be useful not just for unsigned acts but can also prove effective for setting up the campaign for a signed record. Ministry of Sound are among the labels that recognise the potential effect a daily soundclip can have when we chose one of their tracks. Our readers include the key radio, TV and media contacts in the UK and further afield, and our track record of picking hits early and featuring them upfront speaks for itself:
