We’ve been singing the virtues of singer, songwriter and musician Annika Kilkenny for nearly a year now, and for good reason. Her series of heartfelt, captivating folk-led singles, including RotD-featured ‘Sentences’ and ‘Stone’s Throw Away’, have earned the praise of The Line of Best Fit and a host of Irish tastemakers, including Hot Press, RTE, Nialler9 and the Irish Sunday Times. Named by Guitar.com as one of the “singer-songwriters making acoustic music cool again”, the Co. Kilkenny born artist has also caught the attention of Laufey, who personally invited her to open a London show last year. Last Friday (14 February), Annika released her latest project ‘Me In The Mud’ – an EP chronicling the turbulence of young adulthood. Produced by Ant Whiting (Lana Del Rey, Matt Maltese) and co-written by Emily Phillips (Florence and the Machine, Matilda Mann, SOAK), the release marks a confident evolution in her artistry, blending classical, folk and jazz influences. ‘Tango’ sees her adopting a Latin and bossa nova air to her intimate guitar style and it’s gorgeous, showing yet another layer to the talented musician. Praise for the EP has come from Dork, Clash, and The Rodeo, plus she has performed two sessions with Mahogany and The Influences. We can’t wait to see what she does next, and if she isn’t on your radar yet, now’s the time.
