We say

We do love a good pop return here at RotD, and in this case, one that has been 18 years in the making. In 2004, we helped Alexis Strum, who as a songwriter wrote tracks for Kylie Minogue, Rachel Stevens, The Thrillseekers, and Monrose, sign to Mercury, having previously been on Universal. After being dropped, she gave up on music completely until last year when she wrote a hilarious Twitter/X thread about her former pop star career, which went viral. Alexis then shared her story on Woman’s Hour, R4 shows, Ireland AM, and in the Times, Independent, and Metro. This resulted in two of her previously unreleased major label albums being released and clocking up 650k streams on Spotify alone, while her videos on TikTok have enjoyed over 5m views. With a newfound fanbase, particularly within the LGBTQ+ community, Alexis decided to make a comeback. Inspired by a comment she saw on a dating forum, ‘Karma’, co-written with and produced by ShadowHands (Tom Grennan, Rag‘n’Bone Man), is her first original material in 18 years, and it’s good, very good. With its soulful pop vibe and insanely catchy pop hooks that sit sonically between Teddy Swims meets Hozier, ‘Karma’ was released today (25 October). Full of mainstream pop potential with its radio-friendly air, the track is perfect for additions to new pop editorial playlists at DSPs, alongside spins at Radio 1, Radio 2, Capital, and Heart. Watch the accompanying video today from midday here. With an album, ‘Sexy/Sad’, ready to go, Alexis is seeking a publishing and label/services deal and a live agent. Next month, Alexis will be playing an acoustic set at the Cavendish Arms in London on 18 November, and we expect there may be quite some demand for it. Oh, and she has been approached by a well-known TV company to develop a docuseries about her return to music.
