With its gently strummed acoustic guitar melody, soft percussion and soaring string accompaniments, ‘Return To The East’ is the beautiful new folk-tinged single from Scottish singer/songwriter Rhona Macfarlane. Written during a visit to her hometown of Montrose, Scotland, the track is about going “back your roots, back to simplicity and in turn overcoming doubt”. Recorded at Watercolour Studios in the Scottish Highlands with co-producer/engineer Matt Ingham (Laura Marling, Lianne La Havas) during sessions for her forthcoming debut album, ‘As The Chaos Unfolds’ (out 24 January), the track is an honest and touching ode for fans of Nick Drake, Joni Mitchell and Rufus Wainwright. Having received tastemaker praise from Radio 2, BBC Scotland and Americana UK for her previous single, ‘July Rain’, we expect to see this pick up support with these again, as well as 6 Music and additions to folk-based playlists at DSPs.
