Our next Ones To Watch 2024 is Los Angeles-based Icelandic-Chinese artist, composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist Laufey. Inspired by the jazz standards of Ella Fitzgerald after going through her dad’s record collection, Laufey has caught the attention of Gen-Z on TikTok (3.1m followers) and tastemakers alike for her heartrending, jazz-tinged songs. 2023 has been a phenomenal year for the artist, having cemented herself as one of the major players on the jazz scene with her second album ‘Bewitched’. On release, the album debuted at No.2 on the Spotify Global Debut chart and has become the biggest jazz album debut in Spotify history, while the lead track from the LP, ‘From The Start’, was the No.1 streaming jazz song in the US and has amassed over 184m global streams. She has just finished a sold-out headline tour of North America and Asia and will tour the UK and Europe in February and March next year. What we love is her ability to blend jazz instrumentation with modern pop standards to create beautiful tracks full of emotion and a timeless feel as heard this spellbinding number. With tastemaker support from the likes of Pitchfork, Vogue, Nylon, NME, The Line of Best Fit, DIY, Clash, NPR, BBC Radio 3 and more, as well as a recent Grammy nomination for ‘Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album’ for ‘Bewitched’, Laufey’s star is only set to ascend further in 2024.
