Inspired by the Japanese light novel Haruhi Suzumiya, IRL is the vibrant new single from genre-bending French band Tapeworms. Originally dubbed a “shoegaze revival trio”, the trio, consisting of Margot (vocals, bass, synths) and brothers Elio (drums) and Theo (guitar, synths), released their debut album, Funtastic, in 2020. Now back with new material, the group are pushing their sound in new directions by exploring a wide range of subgenres, from indie pop to electronic to art-pop. This sparkling blend of ethereal vocals, dreamy synths and wonky pop beats, tinged with 8-bit melodies, is an absolute delight. Watch the official video here. Deserving of plays on 6 Music and specialist shows at Radio 1, we expect to see and hear this popping up alternative pop and synthpop contextual playlists at DSPs soon. The band will be touring the UK in May and will play the Strongroom in London on the 10th.
