It’s been nearly two years since we featured London-based artist Jack Mercer, aka VC Pines, and his silky smooth dose of neo-soul in Smoke Without Fire. Since then, he has released his Concrete EP, which received radio support from BBC Radio 1 (Jack Saunders), BBC 6 Music (Chris Hawkins), BBC Radio 2 (Jo Whiley), BBC Radio London, Radio X (John Kennedy) and Absolute Radio (Danielle Perry), before he took a hiatus from releasing music in 2022. Now back with this hypnotic and sensual offering that bridges the soundscapes of Glass Animals, Young Fathers, Steve Lacy and Kendrick Lamar, VC Pines shows another side to his musicality. Released last week, Running was premiered on Chris Hawkins 6 Music Show before becoming a 6 Music ‘New Music Fix’ and receiving plays on Jess Izsatt’s BBC Introducing Show, alongside an interview with Robert Elms on BBC London. Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer and YouTube Music have all featured the track across their editorial playlists while the Line of Best Fit, DIY Mag, Notion, Wordplay and more have sung the song’s praises. Last week, he performed at a sold-out show at Map Studio Cafe in London, and this September will headline the Lafayette. A hazy and warm return for this young artist.
