Fat Funny Friend
We say
Next up on our Ones To Watch 2023 is American singer-songwriter Maddie Zahm. The Boise-bred artist released her debut EP, You Might Not Like Her, earlier this year, a project that intimately documents some of the big changes she’s experienced over the last year: a life-changing journey that includes leaving the stifling church community where she long served as a worship leader, a journey of body-acceptance, moving to Los Angeles and coming out as queer. Featuring Zahm’s extraordinary vocals, songwriting and bravely detailed storytelling, the project is a heart-on-sleeve exploration of the often-painful experiences that have shaped her. The release featured this beautifully raw and delicate number that quickly found support online by going viral and has now amassed over 60m streams. With over 100m total global streams and DSP support for her music from Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music and Deezer, the 24 year old has drawn praise here in the UK from the Line of Best Fit, word and Radio 1 (Jack Saunders, Molly King). Maddie made her live debut in the UK in late September with a sold-out show at London’s Omeara and is now working on releasing new music next year. We think her unapologetic and compassionate truth-telling songwriting, powerful vocals and inner strength make her an artist that should be on everyone’s radar for 2023.
