Bricks In The Wall
We say
Today’s Ones To Watch 2023 is east London storyteller and self-described G-Folk artist Hak Baker. An active community leader and mentor, rooted in his beloved Isle of Dogs, Baker’s music, a blend of acoustic, alternative indie, folk, rap punk, ska and electronic, has seen him amass an ever expanding, like minded audience of fans and peers. With his 2019 mixtape, Babylon, 2021 EP, Misled, and this shimmering take on the state of Britain today, Hak has captured the attention of tastemakers, including Hunger (cover of Oct 2022), i-D, NME, Wonderland, Complex, COLORS, Radio 1 (Jack Saunders), 6 Music (Lauren Laverne, Tom Robinson), Rinse FM, Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music and Deezer. Alongside this, he has collaborated with Rachel Chinouriri, Celeste, Mike Skinner, Skepta, Pete Doherty and Reuben Dangoor, been synced to Fifa 2023 soundtrack with Bricks In The Wall, and has a longstanding relationship with Dr Martens – which resulted in a mural of Hak in Shoreditch. On the live front, Hak has played at Glastonbury, Boomtown, Alexandra Palace (Metronomy support) and completed a regional headline tour of the UK this year. It’s been a busy year for the rising star, who with his G-Folk sound, and desire to build a community for artists to be themselves despite their backgrounds, has made him a leading light on the independent scene and makes him one of our Ones To Watch 2023. Powerful, thoughtful, and just darn good.
