Calling My Name
We say
Championed by Gilles Peterson on his 6 Music show and Gemma Bradley on BBC Introducing, Freya Roy is a singer-songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist who is bringing back the sound of “Street-soul” with a modern flair or two. Following up on last year’s Fantasies Reimagined with Gabriel Gifford and Maya Law, Freya has released this hypnotising blend of nu-jazz and electronica on Wednesday (16 February). Calling My Name is a gorgeously laidback and mellow track with smooth guitar riffs and an almost boom-bap beat. It’s already picked up tastemaker support from Clash, The Pit and Colors, while we believe this would also be perfect for chilled and soul-based contextual playlists at streaming too. Watch Freya’s co-directed video with Jess Vincent here. Further praise for Freya’s music has come from Vogue, Earmilk and Haste magazine, but don’t be surprised if more people start to tip her in the near future as Freya has all talent to carve out a niche for herself with her sumptuous music. Having played at Latitude Festival last year, she is planning to head out to play more gigs and festivals as the year progresses. One to watch.
