Muddy Waters
We say
Next up on our Ones To Watch 2022 is the talented Brighton-raised singer-songwriter Max Pope. He first started by busking in his hometown at the age of 12 before attending the BRIT School at 16. After being spotted by a manager at the school he started to release music, but he soon became disillusioned with the music industry and the direction his team, at the time, was leading him, so he decided to quit music. He then started his own gardening business, which became a solace for him and, over time, rekindled his creativity and joy for music. Since returning in 2019, Max has delivered a string of confident releases, including a collaboration with Tom Misch. Along the way, Max has amassed over 15m streams with playlist support from Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon. His songs have received multiple spins across Radio 1, 6 Music and Apple Music 1, and drawn praise from the Line of Best Fit and Clash. Among his many fans are Arlo Parks, Joy Crookes and Olivia Dean, as well as upcoming producer and RotD favourite Conor Albert, who recently shared one of his video jams with Max on vocals and guitar. This soulful and breezy number is his second single (released today) from his forthcoming debut album. It beautifully combines Beatles-esque harmonies/melodies with late '90s/early '00s indie tinged vibes for a gorgeous earworm, which we can guarantee you will be humming happily to yourself all day. Now, what we love most about Max is his ability to seamlessly blend the old with the new to create addictive and highly enjoyable music for all generations. With more music to come later this year, an SXSW performance, and more UK gigs to be announced soon, we expect big things for Max in 2022.
