Last April, we highlighted the return of WEIRDO, the moniker of Berlin-based artist Josh Christopher (previously of Sony UK signed duo IYES), with the unashamedly leftfield slice of pop that was EUROTRASH. Having previously found fans at tastemakers like Clash, Line of Best Fit, Pigeons & Planes and many more, plus support at Spotify and Radio 1 for his early singles (Disco, Butter, Armanio and SAPPHIRE), EUROTRASH saw WEIRDO gain praise from Wonderland, Earmilk, 6 Music, and Spotify. Now, he is back today with the release of his A Mixtape For Heartbreak (2008-2020), a collection of ten tracks rotating around the sphere of lost love and new beginnings. Predominantly written and produced by WEIRDO in his Berlin recording studio, tracks taken from the release have already been featured on Spotify (Fresh Finds) and Apple Music (New In Indie) editorial playlists. This alt-pop ballad sees WEIRDO play with nostalgic acoustic-folk guitar melodies against a backdrop of lo-fi percussion, as sweeping and upbeat electronic crescendos meet a dark-pop maelstrom near the end of the track. Perfect for mood-based and new release programming this week, VACANCE is a track you need to hear.
