We have been following the soulful sounds of Ellen Murphy, aka Only Girl, since we heard her sublime track Fortune last year. Having emerged from the DIY scene of south east London, Ellen was a recipient of the PRS Momentum Music Fund earlier this year, which has helped her to fund the release of her debut EP, Bittersweet, produced by Henry Binns (Zero 7) in April. The EP garnered enormous support from the likes of the Line of Best Fit, Notion, BBC Introducing, the Independent and Spotify (NMF UK) to build on previous track features with Noisey, Fader, Wonderland and Clash, as well as sessions with Radio 2 (Dermot O’Leary) and Mahogany. Her new single, Release, out today, is a beautifully understated and brooding piano-based number with a glorious laidback R&B groove. Co-written with emerging UK producer Lostboy and produced by longterm collaborator JMAC, this glorious track is surely destined to win more tastemaker praise and feature on new release programming playlists across streaming services this Friday. Only Girl will be playing a secret sold-out show in London this November and will return to play her biggest headline show at Omeara on 4 April. Moving R&B dream pop from a rising star.
