When The Heart Attacks, the lead single from Gabrielle Papillon’s excellent new album Keep The Fire, sees the Canadian singer songwriter push her pop sensibilities to the fore with expert precision and artistic flair. Described as a feminist anthem by the singer, it’s a brilliant song styled on a folk guitar base with a lolloping drum beat and sentimental strings. Lauded as one of the finest new songwriters in Canada by CBC Radio and chosen as one of Paste Magazine’s 10 best albums of October, Gabrielle has built an enviable reputation to take overseas. In 2015 she was awarded ‘Recording of the Year’ at her native Nova Scotia Awards and has had songs placed in popular shows Rookie Blue and This Life. Spending time in the UK from this week, we’re looking forward to her launch party at state51’s HQ this Friday (10 November) followed by more UK shows including two in Hackney at Biddle Bros and The Star on 16 and 29 November respectively.
