Familiar Stranger
We say
The Nordics don't have a monopoly on crafting perfect pop songs, it seems. Southend-based band ARCAVES take elements from soul, trip-hop and that 90’s R&B pop vibe that once dominated radio, and it’s immediately obvious when pressing play that you’ve stumbled across something very special here. They formed in 2014 and first emerged when they won the local Essex Undiscovered competition. Ollie WB at BBC Introducing Essex has been championing them from the start. This track's chilled-out yet upbeat feel, perfect for the spell of warm early summer weather that’s about to hit us, has a playful bassline and stirring harmonies on the soaring chorus that remind us of Zero 7 at times and China Black's enormous but largely forgotten 1994 smash Searching. Right now they’re working on their forthcoming debut album and played London’s Primrose Hill Festival yesterday (May 21). We're finding it hard to express just how much we adore this track without resorting to gushing superlatives. But ARCAVES deserve worldwide success, for this tune alone is an uber-cool monster.
