Bang Boom
We say
Bogota, one of the world’s most violent cities, was the birthplace of Lao Ra, an artist who started writing songs at the age of 12 after escaping into the world of MTV, which she watched avidly with her brothers. Now based in Hackney, she is already seeing attention at a global level. Her last release Drum Machine has topped 4.1 million Spotify plays with support at press and radio across France, Scandinavia, Mexico, Brazil, the US, her native Colombia (where the great video was shot at the Barranquilla carnival), and here in the UK with plays from Annie Mac. Style mags and blogs including i-D, Fader, Hunger and Notion have championed her, and Popjustice described a recent encounter as a ‘total POPSTAR ALERT scenario’. Following support slots for Rejjie Snow, MØ and Izzy Bizu, and a sold out Hoxton Square Bar & Kitchen show, catch her on tour currently with Crystal Fighters and on upcoming dates with Anne-Marie. Inspired by the equally tough MIA, Lao Ra’s sound is wonderfully confident three-minute pop with edge, but accessible enough to cross over worldwide in a huge way.
