Josh Daniel reduced Simon Cowell to tears last year when his X Factor audition of Labrinth's Jealous earned him more than 80m YouTube hits. Despite being in the final six of the boys category at the Judge’s Houses stage, his mentor Nick Grimshaw didn’t put him through to the live shows. But that hasn’t stopped the 22-year-old Teessider from dusting himself down and making a spectacular impact with this genuinely excellent R&B pop gem. It’s his official debut single, released on grime label RU Listening, and it’s making doubters sit up and take note, thanks to its super slick sound that we feel could work at a global level right now. Taken from recent studio sessions with producers from Roc Nation, and already premiered via Notion, with features this week from The Line Of Best Fit and Digital Spy too, momentum is building for his debut album, set for release next year. Josh’s a huge fan of John Legend and that soulful vibe shines through here, along with an honesty and credibility that looks set to make him an unassuming superstar. Turn this up loud. It’s a cracking single.
