Norma Jean Martine first featured as an unsigned artist in our magazine's weekly Compass section in 2013. Originally from New York, but now London-based, the past 12 months have seen things really start to slot into place for her, ahead of the October 14 release of debut album Only In My Mind. This lead-in track is a dreamy slice of adult pop which also features on the soundtrack to Cara Delevingne and Will Poulter’s coming-of-age indie drama Kids In Love. As with the previously-featured Animals and No Gold, production across the album comes courtesy of Danton Supple (noted for his work with Coldplay on X&Y) and additionally from Ed Harcourt and Joel Pott, formerly of Athlete. Norma’s also co-written I’m Still Here on the LP with the legendary Burt Bacharach. She’s a class act live too, as her recent Robert Elms BBC London session showed. See for yourself at either her headline show at Oslo in Hackney tomorrow (September 21) or the Reeperbahn Festival this Saturday night (September 24). Sheer quality like this never goes out of style. Hers is a tasteful grown-up sound that’s built to last.
