Fly Away
We say
Maxi, Matt, Benji and Wesley are Alibi, a teenage band from Sussex who show great promise here on this pacy indie guitar jangler. They started off covering songs by cult sixties US underground band The Human Beinz before developing their own sound, but still with a nod to their garage-rock heroes. Continuously gigging on the Eastbourne and Hastings circuit over the past 18 months, they’ve already released a live album Vice Versa, along with a self-titled debut EP at the end of last year. BBC Introducing has featured them locally, and we hear a lot of Pete Shelley from Buzzcocks in the vocal delivery and urgency on this track. There’s a great bassline riff that drives the whole thing along, with plenty of sharp retro influences drawing you in. They play a London gig in the basement at the Alleycat bar and club on Denmark Street tomorrow night (September 15). Like many youthful bands at the start of their journey, there’s a certain innocence to their work so far, but we hear great potential and look forward to the imminent arrival of further new material. As a primer, this is a cracking start.
