With a song that instantly oozes style and quality, meet singer and musician Kat Deal. As an athlete for Team GB, all set to make her mark at the London Olympics in 2012, a hip injury hospitalised her and she was forced to retire early. Since then, she's taken solace in music, finding she had a natural gift for it, and has honed a classy, sophisticated and soulful sound inhabited by the likes of Oleta Adams, Mica Paris, Anita Baker and Sade back in the day. The influence of playing and leading gospel choirs, along with her time as part of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, has certainly rubbed off. As a horn player and backing vocalist, she’s been working with A List stars. But we think this track will set her on the road to success in her own right. After a well-received Sofar Session last week in Kensington, Kat has the ear already of Gary Crowley, Janice Long and Chris Hawkins across BBC Radio, and will support Judie Tzuke at London’s Bush Hall in November. Whilst many of her close friends are off to Rio, she’s already eyeing her gold medal place on music’s podium of glory. This is a sumptuous start.
