Lost Boy
We say
Once in a while, a song comes along out of the blue and completely defies the usual expectations of how a hit should sound. This current Billboard smash from Ruth B is one such song. And the stats that are stacking up on this are incredible. There’s nothing to it, except a girl singing at a piano, but it’s managed to cut through and connect in an enormous way, quietly shifting 85,000 units in the UK alone, even without being serviced to radio here until next week. In the States, it’s been inside the Top 10 sales chart for five straight weeks, spent over two months inside the US Shazam Top 10, sold over 1.2m singles globally, delivered nearly 14m video views, and turned this 20-year old musician from Edmonton in Canada into a huge Vine star, thanks to the six-second loops she posted as she built up sections of the song over time. With support already in the UK from The Guardian, Evening Standard, Clash and Mahogany, watch out for her debut London date soon. Simple, fuss-free, organically-created and breathtakingly raw, this is one of the most memorable debuts of the year.
