The vibrancy of Swedish-made pop dazzles us and this cool song from Naomi Pilgrim is another example of why the country’s music scene today is so revered globally. After singing back-up vocals for acts including Lykke Li, Naomi launched her own career three years ago and her 2014 self-titled EP saw critics comparing her favourably to great artists like Sade and Lauryn Hill. Barbados was her childhood home and after almost a decade in Sweden, she made her first trip back last year but was shocked to see poverty much more prevalent than when she was a kid. There’s a thought-provoking story that inspired the lyrics on this soulful, electro pop track. It's beautifully layered and contains a chorus that nicely merges her two cultural backgrounds into a memorable, almost-tribal hook. With worldwide blog and music press support, plus a huge swathe of showcase events like JaJaJa, SPOT, Way Out West, Øya and more under her belt, she plays a Stockholm show with Mapei on May 19 and we hope to see her back in the UK soon. Far from sinking, she deserves to fly high with this.
