Released last Friday (January 29) and with only a few days awareness pre-release, this debut single from ZAYN has pretty much bulldozed everything in its path to become not only the world’s hottest song right now, but the biggest too. The stats are already huge. In the first twelve hours on sale, it’d topped the iTunes chart in 60 countries and given the former One Direction star the fairytale beginning to his solo career, one that will see him pursuing a path more musically suited to his own personal tastes, it seems. This startling debut comes from his album Mind Of Mine, due March 25. Minimal electro beats and blips courtesy of producer Malay (noted for his exceptional work with Frank Ocean) accompany a passionate, soulful vocal that’s more in tune with the output of The Weeknd right now than his former boyband mates. You sense he’s been itching to get this out for ages. Now it’s here, the entire globe seems to have embraced it immediately. Like Justin Timberlake post NSYNC or George Michael post-Wham!, ZAYN’s take on contemporary R&B pop is astonishingly good.
