Royce Wood Junior scoops our Record of The Year title for this superb track that passed many people by, but could be about to get the attention it richly deserves as 2016 kicks in. Taken from his remarkable album The Ashen Tang, which bafflingly failed to get any recognition from the Mercury Prize panel, this has also found its way on the end of year lists from Time Out and the Line Of Best Fit (who’ve also named him as a One To Watch for the new year). Now, we hear that a video for this track finally arrives in the first week of January, which should rekindle interest in this glorious electro pop groove with a soulful '70s funk feel. He’s also confirmed for Eurosonic next month, embarks on a headline tour that includes a London gig at Oslo on February 10, and he’ll soon be announced on the bill for one of summer’s big festival line-ups. With recent production work for Jamie Woon, Nao, Jessie Ware, Jodie Abacus and Jono McLeary, plus his own Spotify play tally up around 1.5m to date, everything is in place for him to crack the mainstream. Cool, British, distinctive - we applaud and celebrate everything he’s achieved so far and wish him all the best for a cracking 12 months ahead.
