Catherine Anne Davies is The Anchoress and this comes from her debut album Confessions Of A Romance Novelist. She’s a talented songwriter, author, producer and musician who was born in Wales but grew up training to be a ballerina. That deep-rooted artistry is fully on display here as she teams up with Mansun frontman Paul Draper to create an alluring anthem declaring the joys of being alone. She describes her work here as ‘revenge pop’, blending elements from the worlds of prog and pop, and it has already found favour at 6 Music and Xfm as well as with tastemaker blogs including The Line Of Best Fit and The Quietus. The EP contains five different mixes of the track including collaborations with White Hinterland, London-based electronic producer Philip Reach, and a strings-enhanced version from Cenzo Townshend. The Anchoress is currently touring with Simple Minds, is working with Draper on his long-awaited debut solo album, and has started work on her own second album with former Suede guitarist Bernard Butler. Bold and ballsy, this is splendid and her best to date.
