Honeydripper
We say
We first featured the rather wonderful Royce Wood Junior back in March with his track Midnight, the first taster of his superb debut album The Ashen Tang. Since then, we’ve played the album loads and keep coming back to this supremely cool and deliciously-wonky track. You’ll hear influences such as Prince and Stevie Wonder distilled in there but this stands uniquely on its own, quite unlike anything else about right now. Annie Mac is a fan and she gave this its first play on her Radio 1 show on Tuesday evening. Last month RWJ completed a sold-out residency at The Waiting Rooms in east London, supported by friends Gwilym Gold, JONES, Denai Moore, and featuring a guest appearance from his mate Jamie Woon, for whom he used to play guitar in his live band. Next up, more shows soon, including a London date at Electrowerkz on October 21 with support from hotly-tipped Jodie Abacus. If we’ve correctly interpreted the lyrics to Honeydripper, they appear to be absolutely filthy. And all the better for it, the saucy devil.
