By The Highway
We say
Nottingham based six-piece The Gorgeous Chans are all still at college and university but they’ve already been picking up airplay at BBC 6Music for this rather lovely track. Forming one half of a double-A sided single with the song Marina & I (which Huw Stephens featured on his Radio 1 show after they played at Bestival last year), recording took place between free time at a local college as well as in a rather ramshackle studio set up in a backroom belonging to one of the lads. However, the results are impressive. Led by a seductive guitar riff and vocal reminiscent at times of the great Roddy Frame from Aztec Camera, the addition of horns as the song builds turns it into a jaunty festival anthem that’s wistful and nostalgic but a hint of Paul Simon’s Graceland in the musicianship. Which is hardly surprising really when you realise that was the initial starting point for the band all playing together. See them live at The Garage in London this coming Saturday night (June 6) supporting The Hummingbirds. Positively delightful.
