After two well-received sets at The Great Escape over the weekend, there’s much deserved interest in US act Dark Waves. Essentially the work of LA-based artist Nick Long, this brooding, moody track shows flashes of inspiration and influence from the great indie synth pioneers of the past four decades. However, it feels perfectly in tune with common modern woes too, describing real feelings of relationship constraint when neither side expresses their true emotions to each other. Nick says the name of the act derives from the maturity of understanding the beauty that both darkness and light can bring. Taken from his current EP, this featured in cult US TV drama The Vampire Diaries last year and his work has racked up more than five million Spotify plays to date. He's live in London for a free show at The Stillery in Camden this Wednesday (May 20) and plays over the Bank Holiday weekend on the Dot To Dot Festival bill in Manchester, Bristol and Nottingham. Confessional and honest, we sense a real artist at work here, one likely to nurture a loyal fanbase for many years to come.
