Blackbird
We say
Acclaimed Mercury Prize nominee Sam Lee is a Londoner who has been one of the key figures of the again-burgeoning British folk scene so far this decade. He’s breathed a fresh burst of interest, creativity and energy into it, cultivating a vibrant new audience in the process. In 2012 the Mercury judges recognised his talents on his debut album Ground Of Its Own. Now comes the follow-up album The Fade In Time, featuring lead song Blackbird. This remarkable track is his interpretation of a 1950s song performed by Shropshire gypsy singer May Bradley. Broadsheet and online reviews have been unanimous in their praise with The Guardian giving it a 5* rating, declaring it ‘an album of the year’. There are four London shows this week, the second of which is tonight (March 18) at St Pancras Old Church. Inventive, esoteric and quite unlike anything else you’ll hear this week, we’re delighted to be able to still find music in 2015 that overturns preconceptions and flips perceived wisdom completely on its head. Sam does that here to dazzling effect.
