Let Her Go - Record of the Year
We say
This year's Record of the Year accolade goes to Mike Rosenberg, aka Passenger, whose six-year journey to overnight success is a testament to tenacity and a standing refutation of the received wisdom that artist development is dead (he has worked with managers IE for 11 years). Since we first featured him and his then band in 2007, Rosenberg has released five albums, played hundreds of gigs around the world and, following the eventual UK release of his slow-burn European hit Let Her Go in May, became the first British artist to score a million-selling single this year. When we featured the track in April, we noted that while Rosenberg was not yet enjoying the sales figures of his friend and touring partner Ed Sheeran, the video for Let Her Go had been played a 'whopping' 17m times. How things have changed; the single now boasts sales of 1,023,000 and counting, and the video is at close to ten times its April tally. Album All The Little Lights is platinum on 360,000 sales to date, making him the top-selling British artist of the year, and the fourth biggest over all. Congratulations Mike from all of us at Record of the Day.
