Kid From London
We say
We don't know a great deal about Ulla Nova, other than that she's from London and we can't stop playing her addictive and possibly-autobiographical debut track Kid From London. Her slender biography refers to her as a songstress, which is accurate in that she's a female singer of songs, although 'chanteuse' might be a more fitting description - there's a Birkin-esque sultriness to her delivery suggesting femme fatale more than pearly queen. Among her inspirations she lists 2CV's and 'high speed', contradictory perhaps until you hear the electro-pop euphoria of Kid From London, which starts out as a gentle amble through the chicer arrondissements of Paris before shifting gear into a full-tilt chorus like a TGV clearing the banlieues. Habit-forming like Gauloises Blondes, it will be included on her debut EP, out early next year. Having recently supported Bipolar Sunshine on a number of his UK dates, Ulla Nova plays her first headline show at Servant Jazz Quarters on Monday, November 18.
