N.O.M.O.N.E.Y.
We say
The anticipated explosion of angry punk rock, lit by the blue touch paper of tough times and Tory cuts, never quite seemed to catch light. Not, that is, until Leeds four-piece China Rats chose to ignore their own advice on new EP Don't Play With Fire, returning to the lit firework that is N.O.M.O.N.E.Y., which originally appeared as a demo last year and made the Radio 1 playlist after being championed by BBC Introducing's Alan Raw and later Huw Stephens. Buzzcocks and the Pistols both loom large across the five-track EP, whose Deadbeat has already picked up plays at Radio 1 and Xfm, while an affectionate nod to The Stone Roses on Reeperbahn shows their influences extend to the full pantheon of classic British guitar bands. But it's N.O.M.O.N.E.Y. that catches the zeitgeist most convincingly, accompanied by a fantastic stop-motion video fashioned from coins and notes by acclaimed animator Richard Swarbrick. After festivals including Eurosonic, Reading/Leeds and Benicassim, China Rats are in the middle of a UK tour; catch the fireworks tonight (Oct 9) at the Sebright Arms in London.
