Astronaut EP
We say
The lucky few crammed into a sweaty Scotch of St. James for the live debut by a hotly tipped 20 year-old Britsoul singer last month knew they were witnessing something pretty special. The Guardian agrees, calling Brixton singer, songwriter and producer Joel Compass a UK Weeknd who has 'invented a new paradigm for British R&B', neither of which are hyperbole. Three performances at Wireless followed, and Compass joins Rudimental on tour later in the year. The dark lyrics, exquisite falsetto and smoldering production of previous Astronaut EP cuts Back To Me and F-cked Up garnered near-universal online and specialist Radio 1 love, notching up over half a million YouTube views between them. Lead track Astronaut continues the trend, with plays from Zane Lowe, B.Traits, MistaJam and Trevor Nelson, and we understand it is due a first daytime Radio 1 play today from Sara Cox. A suitably spacey video has added another 100k views to his tally in a week, suggesting Astronaut could well go stratospheric.
