Fresh from playing two well-received shows at Wireless this weekend, unsigned LA singer and self-styled ‘Youthquaker’ Phlo Finister releases her debut Poster Girl EP on July 29. Despite - or possibly because of - a highly conservative upbringing in Oakland, California (her parents banned her from listening to urban music as a child), Finister makes brooding, ethereal R&B that's drawing comparisons with Banks, Cassie, The Weeknd and Lana Del Rey. Produced by Andrew Dawson (Kanye West, Pet Shop Boys) and Benny Cassette, standout tracks Coca Cola Classic, featured here, and Hotel Miami have the music and style press giddy over her exquisite beats and distinctive breathy vocals, while online love runs the gamut from the Guardian to MTV to Best Fit. Radio support comes from MistaJam, Choice FM and Amazing Radio. Primary Talent recently flew to LA for 24 hours just to sign Phlo; find out what the fuss is all about at their Sebright Arms showcase at the end of the month.
