Separate Ways (One For The Road)
We say
Every once in a while a band comes along with a sound so fully formed it's actually hard to believe they're unsigned. But Vancouver-based 'jungle folk' act The River & The Road are, according to their Facebook page, 'the definition of a hungry band', and to judge by their accomplishments to date without a label, publisher or agent, they're certainly not waiting around for other people to make things happen for them. A self-funded debut album selling well; 700 performance hours including extensive touring in Canada and Australia, where album cuts attracted national airplay on CBC and Triple J respectively; TV appearances and press/blog adulation at home and internationally, and a YouTube channel chock full of quality live content. Unsurprisingly, given their immense and immediate folk-rock sound - think Mumfords or Lumineers with bigger balls - there is huge sync interest in both this track and live favourite Straw, Brick & Wood (below). Separate Ways (One For The Road), a former Hype Machine top 10 recorded last year with Alex 'Condor' Aligizakis and Fields of Green when the band were finalists in the Peak Performance Project, is a one-listen smash. Not that one listen - as you'll discover - is anything like enough.
