Gold Car
We say
Among the posse of rising female MC's vying for dominance in the UK hip-hop scene right now, French-Ghanaian east Londoner Phreeda Sharp - dubbed Sharp Shooter on account of her rapid-fire flow - is aiming highest. Of her most recent, statement-of-intent mixtape Ruby, Sex & Vultures, she says: "I'm here to revive female rap in the UK in my own way," which might sound like hubris in a rapper whose producer choices - Ollie Green, bassDrumsnareDrum, TwoBandGeeks and Don Diablo - weren't so unabashedly aimed at connecting commercially. Lead track Gold Car is raw and heavy but hooky, picking up plays at 1Xtra (DJ Target's Targo Embargo), Choice FM (Ras Kwame) and Amazing Radio (Breakfast Show ROTW), and is performing well at club. A lead piece in Sunday Times Culture this weekend places Sharp at the forefront of a scene that, though tough to crack, may well be hers for the taking.
