Darlin’
We say
Texan-born, Brooklyn-based Emily Wells very nearly passed us by. The press release description of her distinctive 'feline' vocal seemed like a platitude right up to the point we realised that Mama, her beguiling debut UK longplayer due out on Monday, had crept up from behind and wormed its way into our affections as a stray cat adopts a new owner. Blending folk, pop and hip-hop, Wells is a magpie multi-instrumentalist whose classical training and diverse influences mean she's just as likely to be found collaborating with Dan The Automator (on the acclaimed Pillowfight album) as with film composer Clint Mansell, with whom she recorded If I Ever Had A Heart for the Stoker soundtrack. New track Darlin' came out on Monday this week, while seductive single Passenger has had us under Wells' spell for some time. She takes her unique live show along with Kurt Vile for his European tour in early June, stopping off at London's Water Rats on June 4.
