2005 Staff picks, James Foley writes: At Record of the Day's Roundtable discussion at In The City in September, there was eloquent patter between Mark McCulloch of Lastminute.com and Steve Lamacq about the sheer joy of discovering new music, adopting it and falling into that act's world. It is what most acts aspire to, but only precious few achieve it. This year, like Mark, I fell into Devendra Banhart's world, only coming up for air to listen to Takk, the first EMI release from Sigur Ros. In a year where Sugababes, Girls Aloud, Madonna and Les Rhythmes Digitales made me want to turn up my radio, the perfect antidote to high energy came in the form of sustained energy taken from the Icelandic's incredible record. Hoppípolla burned a hole in my ears this year, and probably will do so for a long time to come.
