Finishing our Ones To Watch 2023 for this year (but to be continued in the first week of January) is Africa’s pop newcomer Tyla. The Johannesburg native first broke onto the international scene in 2021 with the video to her track Getting Late, co-written with and featuring Kooldrink. Shimmering with the euphoria of South African amapiano, her blend of pop and R&B caught the attention of Paper, i-D and Clash, along with an Annie Mac Tune of the Week on BBC Radio 1, as well as playlist additions on 1Xtra and Kiss Fresh. Alongside this, her single Overdue soundtracked the season 2 trailer for Netflix’s Blood and Water. Everything has been ramping up nicely for this young star and earlier this month culminated in a week in the UK. During this time, she made her first red carpet at the MOBOs, was a surprise guest at Scorpion Kings’ sold out show at Printworks, co-hosted Rampage’s 1Xtra show and went on Radio 1’s Jeremiah Asiamah and Kiss’s Juls radio shows. With over 3.6m streams and 6.6m video views, Tyla has laid the groundwork to fully becoming a breakout global star in 2023 and with fans like MNEK who ran over to talk to her at the MOBOs, we are sure to hear more from her next year, making her one of our Ones To Watch 2023.
