Sleep
Tom The Lion
WE SAY
No one who is familiar with Tom The Lion's MO will be the tiniest bit surprised he has quietly delivered a debut album that's easily the match of - and in many cases far superior to - those of the most talked-about Ones-to-Watch poll winners. Late in 2011 a pair of limited edition, ten inch-only double EPs, collected as The Adventures of Tom The Lion and presented in a box, sold out at Rough Trade without a sniff of media. A clutch of intimate shows in unusual venues - we were among the lucky few to catch him in the basement of Schott Music last summer - cemented his reputation as one of 2013's best-kept secrets. Now he ventures above the radar with Sleep, the first Album of the Month to appear simultaneously in Rough Trade's London and New York stores. Its eponymous lead track - featured here - is flawless, proving that to find the real gems you sometimes have to dig a little deeper.
