Speech Debelle
WE SAY
Two years after winning the Mercury Prize for her debut album Speech Therapy, Speech Debelle has returned, refined and ready to take on the world. For many her Mercury win was an introduction to the artist, and it was a long-odds win, up against the likes of Florence & The Machine's Lungs. Although supported by many critics, the sales and profile never matched that of previous winners. The London rapper is the genuine article; quick witted rhymes - in this case reminiscent of Slick Rick - accompanied by a sharp hiphop groove, and plenty of interest in the sound arrangement. Speech's ability to paint a picture is just that bit better than others in her game today.
