Gen V
Solomon Grey
WE SAY
Solomon Grey, comprising Brit Tom Kingston and Aussie Joe Wilson, are proof not just that long-distance relationships can work, but that they sometimes bear delicious fruits. From a Postal Service-type working arrangement spanning three years and two hemispheres, an epic and expansive album has emerged, whose debut track Firechild had the blogosphere salivating when it appeared online late last year. First single proper, released on the consistently cool Black Butter Records, is Gen V, a Radiohead-esque guitar line driven by an urgent, shuffling groove under a delicate, velvety vocal not dissimilar to Rhye, Bon Iver or - rather more improbably - Black's 1987 hit Wonderful Life. Radio support comes from Zane Lowe, Rob Da Bank, BBC Introducing, Amazing Radio and 6Music - where the track was the clear winner of Steve Lamacq's Rebel Playlist - while the hypnotic cityscape video was premiered by Nylon yesterday. Epic music for long journeys.
