We do like a pop banger here at RotD, and Dublin’s Shobsy has delivered an absolute stunner with his ’80s infused debut, Vanity. Formerly the lead vocalist of RotD-featured rock group State Lights, Shobsy has spent the last twelve months in hiatus working on his sound and stagecraft, propelling himself in a new direction sonically and artistically. Released last week, Vanity is a startlingly offering with riveting falsetto and pulsing synth that mimics the modern-day sonics of the Weeknd with the nostalgic adrenaline rush of ’80s icons like A-ha and Bronski Beat. With soaring highs and lush electronic hooks, the track has seen tastemaker support come from Hotpress, Earmilk, PopWrapped and Popmatters, as well as spins on Today FM. Last Friday, Shobsy performed at a sold-out show at Dublin’s Whelan’s venue. He will support Soda Blonde on an Irish tour this spring. Slick and unapologetic pop from an artist who is at the start of a very exciting journey.
