Money On My Mind
Sam Smith
WE SAY
No surprise seeing Sam Smith on the BBC Sound of 2014 longlist yesterday, and many agree he's a strong contender for the Brits Critics' Choice Award too. You know the back story: the breakout hit with Disclosure last year, the no. 1 single with Naughty Boy (now approaching 200m views on YouTube), the debut EP Nirvana via PMR in October, all leading up to this, his first release for Capitol, with whom he has also just inked a deal in the US making him a global priority for the label. Premiered by Zane Lowe as a Hottest Record last night, Money On My Mind is a one-listen smash; production comes courtesy of Two Inch Punch, around which Smith contorts his unforgettable falsetto into an ear-worm chorus that will lodge itself in your brain well into next year. Any talk of selling out refers only to Smith's incredible track record on the live front: having filled rooms in London, LA and New York, he has just announced a Roundhouse show in May, following a sold-out headline at Shepherd's Bush Empire in February. We've said it before: this is superstar quality.
London gigs: Shepherd's Bush Empire, February 24 / Roundhouse, May 30
