Signed to Mercury late last year, you may recognise Preeya Kalidas from Bend It Like Beckham, the Andrew Lloyd-Webber musical Bombay Dreams or more recently Eastenders and the Chris Morris film Four Lions. Shimmy is her first single, out next month. Written by Celetia Martin and Alex James, the track was produced by Kalle Engstrom (Celine Dion, The Saturdays) and features a rap from much-tipped East London MC Mumzy Stranger. Shimmy succeeds in being a polished and modern record with an assured British Asian flavour, and is deserving of across the board support. A 'tribal remix', courtesy of Jay Sean collaborator Rishi Rish, should also find favour for Preeya in clubs and on specialist radio.
