WE SAY
Today’s Ones To Watch is Manchester-based four-piece Porij. They first came to our attention back in December 2019 when we featured them as one of our Compass artists. Since then, their vibrant, future-facing sound, which doesn’t subscribe to any particular genre, but contains elements of house, new wave and pop, has caught the eye of numerous tastemakers. Early support came from the likes of NME, Guardian, DIY, Dork and Clash, alongside plays by Steve Lamacq, Mary Anne Hobbs, Chris Hawkins and Lauren Laverne at 6 Music. This year saw them release their second EP, Baby Face, containing the above track and the brilliant singles Can’t Stop (see video), Nobody Scared, and Ego, which was Radio 1’s Introducing Track of the Week. Further spins have come from Radio 1 (Clara Amfo, Greg James), Radio 2 (Jo Whiley), Radio X, Apple 1 and Triple J, to name just a few, while the band have also recorded a Radio 1 Maida Vale session for Jack Saunders. At streaming, Spotify and Apple Music are big fans with scores of additions to editorial playlists across the platforms. 2021 saw them head out on two sold-out UK tours and a support slot with Wet Leg, as well as performances at the Great Escape 2021 and SXSW 2021. Now, what we love about this band is their positivity and youthful exuberance combined with the ability to blend genres to create high energy tunes for all kinds of dancefloors, from Manchester to Ibiza. We believe everything is set for Porij to have a massive 2022.
