Oh Pep!
WE SAY
Olivia Haley and Pepita Emmerichs are the duo Oh Pep! and this track is the first single from the debut album Stadium Cake. The pair formed whilst at music secondary school in their native Melbourne, Australia, and have released three EPs since 2012. What we like are the many great influences here, yet you’d be foolish to say they sit in just one single musical box. Think off-kilter Americana pop that’s filled with brooding darkness before unleashing a full-on killer chorus a minute in. That light and shade is provided by the two contrasting personalities of the ladies with Olivia’s fine voice letting rip after Pepita’s almost menacing but subtle violin line. Praise for their live work is steadily building with the New York Times and several key tastemakers gushing about their CMJ Music Marathon performance last October. You’ll be able to see why when they play their first-ever European dates this summer and arrive in London for a gig at Green Note in Camden on May 18 before heading for The Great Escape in Brighton that weekend. Their sound is compelling and this is an understated gem.
