Neil Cowley Trio

In an effort to showcase great music, whatever the genre, this absolutely beautiful piece of work by the Neil Cowley Trio is impressive. The pianist on many of the most memorable tracks on Adele’s 19 and 21, as well as on songs for Birdy and Emeli Sande, contemporary jazz musician Neil began his career playing with Gabrielle and Zero 7. And it’s the latter band’s more ambient, atmospheric sound that’s reflected here on the third single from the trio’s Spacebound Apes album, released last month to glowing reviews. First single Grace has been streamed more than three million on Spotify, moving it from the realms of specialist into mainstream acceptance. With fans and supporters that include Radio 2’s Jamie Cullum, 6Music’s Lauren Laverne, Radcliffe & Maconie, Tom Robinson and Tom Ravenscroft, and John Kennedy at Radio X, many are saying this is his career-defining album. There’s a London gig at Union Chapel gig next Thursday (October 27), whose surroundings will no doubt elevate this music to new heights. If you ever loved the sound of Talk Talk in their Spirit Of Eden era, you’ll adore this.
