Mayer Hawthorne's
debut album, A Strange Arrangement, has been picking up some much-deserved
plaudits on both sides of the Atlantic. Over here Mojo (who called it 'an infectious
soul delight') and Observer Music Monthly have praised it. The former hip-
hop DJ and producer has made an exceptional album, on which he plays most of the
instruments. It's a faithful revival of Motown and other sweet soul sounds, but the
strength is in the songwriting and excellent melodies. As well as this track, ‘Let Me
Know’ is another highlight on the album. Initial radio play has come from Trevor
Nelson and Dermot O’Leary at Radio 2 and Gilles Peterson is also a fan. His
forthcoming European tour includes two London dates. JF
