Don't Trip
Max Marshall
WE SAY
Her former career as wig-maker to Lady Gaga might be a headline-grabber, but the most exciting thing about rising singer Max Marshall is the music. Her Forgive Me mixtape picked up plaudits earlier this year for the warm soul vocal on smoky R&B covers of Rihanna and Frank Ocean. Now the 21 year-old multi-instrumentalist, born in Baltimore but relocated to east London, has delivered an assured debut in Don't Trip, a soulful blend of effortless, old-school R&B with clean, uncluttered production from newcomers Electric, drawing comparisons with India Arie and Jill Scott that are not undeserved. 1Xtra have pitched in heavily, with spins from Mistajam, Trevor Nelson, CJ Beatz and Sarah Jane Crawford, while Phil & Alice have also supported at Radio 1. Marshall also features on the new Matrix & Futurebound single Control, premiered by B.Traits as her Special Delivery this week. She's making it look easy.
